Bewcastle School

Walking the wall

Community information

Bewcastle school is at the heart of the local community. We have regular community lunches to which everyone is invited and our vicars visit school weekly to lead collective worship. Parents and friends of Bewcastle school are amazing at fundraising and recently we have raised money for Macmillan cancer care, Cumbria air ambulance, Unicef, Save the Children and Cumbria wheelchair sports club.

We work with Bewcastle Parish Council wherever possible. If you would like to see their work please go to and follow them on their facebook page - Bewcastle Crack.

ACTion with Communities in Cumbria (ACT) is launching a new project to support villages or neighbourhoods that want to start up Good Neighbours Schemes. Such schemes bring together people who’ve got some time to give with people who need help with small jobs and errands.

The new project will provide advice to local schemes and grants to cover start-up costs.

Most Good Neighbours Schemes help people out with things like collecting prescriptions or shopping, small household tasks or looking after pets. They’re a good way to meet new people and those offering help can do as little or as much as they want. There’s also a real benefit to those being helped who may be older people living on their own and who could be feeling isolated.

The Project is part of a national scheme funded by NESTA which will roll out Good Neighbours Schemes in four other counties as well as across Cumbria. The support on offer includes a toolkit which covers all the information needed to start a local scheme as well as advice from ACT’s staff and a small grant.
